Jaja Ding Dong: An Instant Classic?

Is Jaja Ding Dong stuck in your head? Well, you are not alone!

We are overwhelmed with the reaction of the Netflix movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The movie has already marked a spot in Húsavík’s history, which traces all the way back to the 860s.
Just like the genuine Eurovision Song Contest, the movie is packed with all different song genres. From EuroPop bangers to calmer, power ballads such as the worldwide hit Husavik.
However, there is one song that has been such an earworm to many of us (the good kind of earworm, of course)😁. It is the instant classic Jaja Ding Dong. The song does not represent Fire Saga’s true goals and aspirations and is supposed to be an old Icelandic folk song.
The angry-looking deep-toned townsman Olaf Yohansson could not get enough of this fantastic melody and kept yelling “Play Jaja Ding Dong” throughout the movie, fair and reasonable request we assume. The local pub is no place for Eurovision music, only traditional Icelandic folk music. The Icelandic duo, Lars and Sigrit (Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams) could not let Olaf and the local crowd down and unenthusiastically performed the song once again.
Olaf Yohansson is a character played by the Icelandic actor Hannes Óli Ágústsson, famous for comically portraying the ex-prime minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, you can’t really spot the difference. The former PM later posted on Facebook that he will from now on only ask for Jaja Ding Dong when he pays the local pub a visit.
This famous scene is filmed at a harbor bar called “Skipstjórakráin” translated as Captains Galley. Unfortunately, this bar does not exist but the building houses Húsavík Academic Center (HAC). The academic center aims to promote and facilitate university studies and interdisciplinary research. However, you can always swing by and check if the HAC employees and researchers are up for crowd singing.
In an interview with Vulture
the producer Savan Kotech said they were inspired by Dutch folksongs, wanted to create a song which would be “stupid catchy” and we thank them for that. The super-catchy melody is one thing, but then we have the lyrics. With such a sweet and innocent melody the lyrics are quite the opposite, for example: “My love for you is growing wide and long” and “I swell and burst when I see what we have become”. Reading between the lines, you might get the idea that the movie should be PG 18+.

The people of Húsavík in North Iceland are ready for the Oscars 2021. On Monday, the only Óskar in town declared the red carpet on Húsavík's main street formally open. Cutting a ribbon along with the mayor of Húsavík, the local girls' choir was also present, among others. The choir had participated in recording a video where Molly Sandén performed the song Husavik, which is nominated for an Academy Award this year. Due to unusual circumstances, Sandén could not perform the song on stage at the Oscars as planned. Instead, she went to Húsavík to record a music video with the locals. The video will be premiered at the award ceremony, increasing the anticipation of the locals for this years Oscars, who are already hopeful that the song named after their hometown will win the Oscar and bring attention to this small town that is known as the primary location in Iceland for whale watching.
Óskar Óskarsson is back!
The song “Husavik” was nominated for the best original song in the 93rd Academy Awards. The ceremony will be held 25th of April and we can’t wait.
Nobody is happier than Óskar Óskarsson, as he might welcome another Óskar to Húsavík. After many days of celebrating the Oscar nomination, he is back with a new video. The new campaign follows Óskar and Olaf Yohansson on the Oscar night itself. Olaf (Jaja DingDong guy) is willing to do absolutely anything to see his favorite tune Jaja Dingdong win instead of local’s favorite Husavik. Olaf might have tricks up his sleeve – check out how it pans out in the video below
An Óskar for Húsavík! - Help us get an Oscar nomination.
Nine category shortlist for the 93rd Academy Awards was published yesterday. Among them is the category for best original song. One hundred five songs were eligible in the category and now the shortlist has been cut down to only fifteen songs fighting for an Oscar nomination.
What can we say about 2020? There is no simple way to sum it up, it certainly had its ups and downs for our community in Northeastern Iceland.
After spending the day in Husavik, where we decided to take a rocky boat ride out to get a glimpse of a series of Humpback whales, we knew we had to rejuvenate in the highly recommended Geosea Spa.
The Diamond Circle has now been officially opened. This 250 km route in the Northeast of Iceland includes stunning sights and landscapes. The Diamond Circle has five key destinations, amongst them is Húsavík.
