Eurovision Song Contest Comes to Húsavík!

Jun 29, 2020

The Story of Fire Saga premiered 26th of June on Netflix. The movie takes place in our lovely town of Húsavík.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga...and Husavik

Icelanders are Eurovision-crazy, every May we come together and watch the Eurovision song contest. Iceland continues to deliver the largest viewing share of any market at 98.4%. With the country making it to the Grand Final in 2019 for the first time since 2014, RUV enjoyed their best viewing share in 5 years (Eurovision TV, 2019).

Unfortunately, this year it got canceled due to Covid-19. The light in the dark for Eurovision fans is the new Netflix movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The film follows Icelandic singers Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir , played by Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as they are given the chance to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest.

After Will Ferrell was introduced to Eurovision in 1999 by his Swedish wife, Ferrell has been a fan and a loyal follower of the competition. The actors put on an Icelandic accent for the film, at least they made an honest attempt to replicate our exotic English-accent. The movie was filmed during the Eurovision Contest 2019 in Israel, Scotland, and Iceland. The movie includes a lot of Eurovision cameo appearance, such as Salvador Sobral (Portugal), Loreen (Sweden), Jessy Matador (France), Alexander Rybak (Norway), Jamala (Ukraine), Conchita Wurst (Austria) and Netta (Israel).

A good part of the movie takes place in Húsavík. The actors and crew gave us a visit in October 2019, and the town was turned upside down for the filming. One of the main songs in the movie "Husavik" has reached top 10 of Worldwide iTunes chart (WiwiBlogs, 2020)

For those who have made it to Húsavík and want explore the movie location and discover why Icelanders love Eurovision we recommend the Eurovision walking tour with Travel North.

We hope that you liked this goofy movie but if not, at least you enjoyed to see Húsavík on the big screen (of your television)!

The people of Húsavík in North Iceland are ready for the Oscars 2021. On Monday, the only Óskar in town declared the red carpet on Húsavík's main street formally open. Cutting a ribbon along with the mayor of Húsavík, the local girls' choir was also present, among others. The choir had participated in recording a video where Molly Sandén performed the song Husavik, which is nominated for an Academy Award this year. Due to unusual circumstances, Sandén could not perform the song on stage at the Oscars as planned. Instead, she went to Húsavík to record a music video with the locals. The video will be premiered at the award ceremony, increasing the anticipation of the locals for this years Oscars, who are already hopeful that the song named after their hometown will win the Oscar and bring attention to this small town that is known as the primary location in Iceland for whale watching.

Óskar Óskarsson is back! The song “Husavik” was nominated for the best original song in the 93rd Academy Awards. The ceremony will be held 25th of April and we can’t wait. Nobody is happier than Óskar Óskarsson, as he might welcome another Óskar to Húsavík. After many days of celebrating the Oscar nomination, he is back with a new video. The new campaign follows Óskar and Olaf Yohansson on the Oscar night itself. Olaf (Jaja DingDong guy) is willing to do absolutely anything to see his favorite tune Jaja Dingdong win instead of local’s favorite Husavik. Olaf might have tricks up his sleeve – check out how it pans out in the video below
