Húsavík Mountain and Krubbskálar
This thrilling 16 km mountain biking route begins in Húsavík and climbs steadily up the slopes of Húsavíkurfjall, offering wide-open views over Skjálfandi Bay and the town below.
At the top, the trail continues behind the mountain, where silence and stillness take over. Here, you ride through a landscape shaped by Arctic vegetation, passing through Krubbskálar — a quiet, scenic valley framed by rugged ridgelines. The track alternates between smooth dirt paths and firmer gravel stretches, with occasional rocky sections that challenge your focus and rhythm.
Eventually, the trail reaches a picturesque parking area east of Húsavík, a perfect spot to rest before the final thrill: the JaJa Ding Dong Downhill. This flowing descent zigzags down the mountainside toward the town, with packed earth and loose gravel that demand both control and courage. As you carve through the turns, the view of Húsavík and Skjálfandi Bay unfolds once again — a stunning reward for your effort. The route ends gracefully at the Húsavík Botanic Garden, where vibrant Arctic flora marks the finish line of a ride that combines adventure, scenery, and pure Icelandic spirit.
Using a regular mountain bike on the steepest part of the mountain can be quite challenging, while an electric bike is ideal for the climb. If you’re riding a traditional mountain bike, there’s an alternative route to the left of the mountain that reconnects with the main trail about 2 km later.
Walking or running this route is perfectly fine up to the viewpoint parking area above the town. From there, you must take the main road back down, as the JaJa Ding Dong downhill track is reserved for bikes only for safety reasons.
