Skiing area
When the nights grow darker and snow slowly transforms the Icelandic summer into a world of white, the skiing scene in Húsavík awakens.
In summer, the ski lift rests quietly against the mountain above town, almost blending into the landscape. But once the snow begins to settle, the slopes are carefully prepared, ready for the season’s first skiers.
It’s not only downhill enthusiasts and snowboarders who take to the mountains. About a ten-minute drive from Húsavík, toward Þeistareykir, a beautiful cross-country skiing area has developed. The sport has grown steadily in popularity — both in Húsavík and across Iceland.
Few experiences compare to gliding across untouched snow with panoramic views over Skjálfandi Bay and Húsavík below, surrounded by silence and the northern lights shimmering above.
