Kaldbakstjarnir Lakes/ Goldfish Pond

Offering stunning views back toward Húsavík Mountain and across the bay to the Flateyjarskagi Peninsula, the Kaldbakstjarnir lakes are a delightful place for a walk in any season. It’s a peaceful spot for a picnic, and in autumn the surrounding heathland bursts with berries — perfect for a natural dessert.
An observation hut at the southern end provides shelter and a quiet place to enjoy the scenery. Easily accessible and within walking distance of Húsavík, the area is popular with birdwatchers, who can often spot species such as the Horned Grebe and Red-breasted Merganser.
Across the road from the entrance lies a smaller pond with some unusual features. As the rising mist suggests, it’s a geothermal pool — and in warmer months, some visitors even take a dip. Surprisingly, it’s also home to one of the world’s most northerly goldfish populations — descendants of pets released by locals. It’s a curious and almost surreal sight in winter, with the bright fish swimming beneath the steam and snow.
