On the last weekend in July, from Thursday til Sunday, is one of the more unmissable events in the Húsavík calendar, Mærudagar. Sometimes translated as the ‘Candy Festival’, a more literal translation would be something like ´Candy Days´.
The precise itinerary varies from year to year. Some of 2013’s highlights included concerts in the restaurants, laser tag in the forest, barbecues at the swimming pool, ram show, market by the harbour and a motorcycle exhibition at the gas station. There were competitions involving photography, running and beach volleyball. Exhibitions were held in the fisherman’s baiting huts, and the theatre had special performances to celebrate the event.
In short, there is something for everyone, and an abundance of people to celebrate with. It’s extremely popular with the local region, so this is a great way to get to see and meet a true cross section of Icelandic society.
Events are individually priced.
